Three Excerpts to Accompany an Interview with Kraig Grady

I did an interview with Kraig Grady recently for Xenharmonikon.  He asked for some music excerpts to accompany the interview.  So here are three excerpts, one from an older piece "for Charlemagne Palestine" and two from more recent pieces "The Search for Mistletoe Mine" (2020) and "In Memoriam Harold Budd" (2020).  Program Notes accompany the pieces.

for Charlemagne Palestine was my first drone piece that exploited the acoustic phenomenon of beating produced by very closely tuned electronic tones. It was made for my friend Charlemagne Palestine, whose four day long electronic music/dance/live-in performance at the Theatre Vanguard, in Los Angeles was a complete inspiration for me.  Near the end of the piece, a small surrealist poem I found in a dream is read, in response to the mood created by the electronic tones. The piece was made on the CEMS Moog System at the State University of New York at Albany in the Summer of 1973.  This is an excerpt of the first five minutes of the piece.

Here's a set of program notes for "The Search for Mistletoe Mine."

And here's a program note for "In Memoriam Harold Budd."
